Congestive heart failure is defined as the inability of the heart to pump sufficient blood to maintain the normal functions of the body.

This can result from a number of abnormalities including diseases of the muscle, valvular heart disease, etc. Far and away the major cause in our society is damage to the heart muscle from coronary artery disease and ischemic heart disease. After each heart attack the heart muscle becomes weaker, it loses its synchrony, the shape of a heart is distorted so that the valves do not function properly, There are sections of the heart that do not squeeze and in fact may protrude with each heartbeat. This is commonly called systolic dysfunction.

In order for the heart to maintain its adequate blood flow in this weakened state it must increase in size(enlarge).

In addition because of the heart damage and decrease in blood flow to the heart, the heart experiences a decreased ability to relax which is known as diastolic dysfunction. Diastolic dysfunction exacerbates the symptoms shortness of breath) of congestive heart failure.
