Essential hypertension or high blood pressure usually results from an imbalance in salt metabolism due to an altered kidney function as we age. The high blood pressure causes the aorta (main blood vessel from the heart)to become stiffened which additionally raises the blood pressure. The preferred blood pressure is below 120 systolic not 140. Blood pressures over 125 over years are associated with heart, brain and kidney damage
A stiff and rigid aorta causes a reflected wave from the the extremities to arrive at a time that the heart muscle is not protected by its aortic valve, thereby raising pressures inside the heart. Over time this pressure causes fibrosis(stiffening) and decreased ability of the heart muscle(left ventricle)to relax with resultant diastolic congestive heart failure and premature death. Fortunately over the last 30 years we have been much more successful at treating this problem than atherosclerosis.
