Atherosclerosis involves all of the arteries in the body. It involves the aorta, carotid arteries, the blood vessels to the intestine, the blood vessels to the kidney, the blood vessels of leg and even the blood vessels to the arm. As with coronary artery disease it starts in most people in their 20s and takes decades to progress to the point of symptoms.
If it involves the arteries to the kidneys, it can silently and gradually destroys the kidneys, after which dialysis is the only alternative.
If sufficient narrowing occurs in the arteries to the legs, one develops claudication, pain in the calves with walking relieved by rest
If atherosclerosis develops in the arteries to the arm, it can drain blood flow from the brain causing fainting known as Subclavian Steal.
If atherosclerosis involves the arteries to the intestines, one can experience abdominal pain after eating and sometimes can cause a clot to form in the intestinal blood vessels which then requires immediate surgery.
Sometimes atheroma break off from the aorta and travel to the extremities and kidneys causing renal failure and blotchy blue legs.
Diabetics and smokers are prone to develop severe peripheral vascular disease with non healing leg ulcers which can proceed gangrene and then leg amputations .
All this can be prevented with the early prevention of atherosclerosis.
