Strokes occur when there is damage to the tissues of the brain. The two types are hemorrhagic (ruptured blood vessel into the brain usually caused by high blood pressure) and thrombotic(blood clot in an artery feeding the brain). The hemorrhagic strokes are best prevented by controlling blood pressure. The thrombotic strokes are caused by atherosclerosis, the same process that occurs in the coronary arteries and over all the body’s arteries with atherosclerosis. An artery feeding the brain can have a significant narrowing, close off and then cause a massive stroke. Unless that clot is addressed within three hours the artery remains closed forever.

However, in order to have a stroke you do not need to have a significant narrowing. As in the coronary arteries, atherosclerosis can erode the lining of the aorta or an artery to the brain, at which time a small platelet plug can form and possibly a clot. The platelet plug can cause a TIA (transient ischemic attack) and the clot can cause what is known as RIND(Residual Ischemic Neurological Deficit). Both can break off and travel downstream to cause a stroke. This plug or clot can come off the aorta, or carotid artery without any significant narrowing. All you need is early atherosclerosis which usually starts its development in our 20s.
Multiple repeated emboli to the brain can result in dementia similar to Alzheimer’s disease
Strokes can occur from an arrhythmia known as atrial fibrillation or a tumor inside the heart. The treatment of these conditions is different.
The treatment of most strokes early and late in life is the prevention of early atherosclerosis which is the mission of CVRRUSA. Contact us
